Virgo 101

Despite Its Name, Virgo Earbuds Deliver Exceptional Vocal Performance

When you first encounter Fidue’s earphones, you’re immediately struck by their distinctive design language, remarkable clarity, and impressive burn-in resilience. Those familiar with their previous flagship models—the A81 and A83—will instantly recognize these qualities.

However, with the launch of their new flagship, Sirius, Fidue embarked on a different sonic journey. This sealed hybrid driver in-ear monitor achieves what few thought possible: the natural, expansive soundstage typically associated with open-back headphones. Priced at 5678 yuan, it astonishes audiophiles who appreciate the organic texture of open-back designs.

This flagship also marked Fidue’s venture into astronomical naming conventions. After Sirius’s success, anticipation built around their next release. The answer came in the form of another memorably-priced model: Virgo.

Beyond the Name: Virgo’s Accessible Excellence

Setting aside the playful connotations of “Virgo,” these earbuds position themselves distinctly from the 5678 flagship. During development, I learned that Virgo was initially planned with an integrated smartphone remote (now offered as an optional accessory). This suggests a more accessible, user-friendly approach compared to Sirius.

Virgo returns to the comfortable dimensions of the A83, addressing concerns about Sirius’s larger size due to its multiple drivers. While I found Sirius comfortable, its size proved challenging for some users. Virgo’s CNC-machined aluminum alloy housing features rounded contours that fit snugly in the ear, offering improved comfort for those who struggled with Sirius.

Premium Build and Thoughtful Accessories

Like Sirius, Virgo features a unibody aluminum construction rather than the mixed materials of previous models. It maintains the MMCX interchangeable cable system, compatible with later A83 cables (though early versions may not work). The included silver-plated OFC cable features a taupe soft-rubber sheath revealing the metallic shielding beneath.

Virgo matches Sirius’s accessory package: six pairs of ear tips (three silicone, two double-flange, one foam), plus an additional Comply foam pair. The set includes a metal removal tool and nozzle cleaning rod, demonstrating Fidue’s attention to user experience.

Sound Signature: Vocal Specialist with Refined Tuning

Fidue’s hybrid drivers typically deliver technical precision and strong definition, making them ideal for instrumental music. While Sirius softened the pronounced upper frequencies of earlier models, creating unparalleled naturalness for classical and instrumental tracks, its vocal presentation remained somewhat distant—less ideal for intimate vocal recordings.

Virgo perfectly complements this approach. At its debut, the production model impressed with its relaxed midrange density, forward vocal imaging, and exceptionally smooth upper mids. Virgo’s vocal reproduction lacks aggressive edge, instead offering a spacious, slightly sweet presentation without obvious coloration. Despite its smoothness, highs remain clear and well-extended without any artificial dampening.

Musical Preferences and Burn-In Considerations

From a musical perspective, Virgo excels with Western metal, orchestral soundtracks, rock, and crossover vocals like Josh Groban. These genres showcase its strengths beautifully. However, for Japanese rock (such as Your Name’s theme song), electric guitars can become overly sharp—less recommended for this specific signature.

Fresh out of the box, Virgo might sound restrained—”truly virginal,” one might say. After approximately 100 hours of burn-in, it opens up noticeably, though some may still find it shy compared to demo units. Source matching proves crucial here.

Source Synergy: Surprising Compatibility

Testing with high-end sources like the HIFIMAN 901S with MINIBOX card and FiiO X7MKII (both excellent with Sirius) revealed that Virgo prefers gentler amplification. Surprisingly, direct connection to an iPhone 7 Plus or Vivo X20 yielded smoother, more balanced frequency response—not ultimate resolution, but genuinely enjoyable listening.

Adding an A83 balanced cable to AK70 and X7MKII’s 2.5mm outputs brought noticeable improvement. AK’s smoother signature tamed Virgo’s straightforward highs for comfortable vocal listening, while X7MKII preserved detail without harshness, enhancing separation significantly.

Conclusion: The Accessible Perfectionist

Virgo thrives with modest sources rather than ultra-high-end equipment, finding particular synergy with smartphones many audiophiles overlook. For those seeking maximum performance, balanced cabling with compatible sources delivers optimal results.

Excellent smartphone compatibility, superior comfort, versatile connectivity, and natural, relaxed vocals—Virgo combines these strengths into a compelling package that proves sometimes, perfection lies in accessibility rather than extreme technicality.
